What Does a Nutria Look Like and What Are Its Characteristics?
The American nutria is an animal from the rodent family, whose natural habitat is in South America. In the United States, Europe, and Asia, they appeared due to human intervention. Nutrias are an amphibious species that adjusts very easily to prevailing conditions. In the 1960s and 1970s, they were a valuable fur-bearing animal used for producing noble furs, but their meat was also harvested for making kabanos sausages. Until the 1980s, nutria lived in the wild, and it was only in those years that breeding of these little animals began. The nutria is a large rodent with dense fur, resembling a rat. Young ones weigh about two kilograms, while adult nutria can reach up to 9 kilograms and measure about 40 – 65 centimeters. They have a large, characteristic tail that measures 30 – 75 centimeters. Nutrias have a big head with small ears and eyes. They have good hearing but poor eyesight. Their large, orange-colored incisors protrude from their mouths. The front limbs with four fingers allow the nutria to grip very well. It is the front limbs and whiskers that contribute to their well-developed sense of touch. Nutrias also have a well-developed sense of smell, which they use to find food and recognize their young. The hind legs of the nutria, consisting of four fingers connected by a membrane, allow it to swim in the water. Their bodies are covered with dark brown or sapphire fur. In breeding, three dominant color varieties are obtained: white – non-albino, amber – golden, and black. Meanwhile, the albino color is a recessive variety. Unlike most fur-bearing animals, nutrias are born with brown fur that grows until the sixth week of the rodent’s life. Nutrias reproduce twice a year, with a litter containing about 4 – 8 offspring. Young nutrias are born almost fully functional and reach sexual maturity at the age of 6-7 months. The mother has four to five pairs of nipples positioned towards the back, allowing her to nurse her young while swimming.
What Do Nutrias Eat and Where Do They Live?
The American nutria is an animal that lives along the shores of water bodies such as ponds or lakes, which are covered with dense vegetation. They build their nests from reeds. Nutrias are excellent swimmers and divers, capable of staying underwater for up to ten minutes. Nutrias are herbivores, so they feed exclusively on vegetation, mainly found along river and lake banks. They eagerly eat tree shoots and other plants, stems, roots, leaves, and also bark from trees. If they come across fruits or crops cultivated by humans, they certainly will not refuse them. Occasionally, nutrias also feed on mussels. The situation is different in nutria farming, as they are fed specially formulated diets and feeds for this type of animal. For nutria owners in domestic conditions, an online pet store offers food options for these animals. It is very important to provide these animals with necessary food that nourishes them well and affects their health.
Are There Nutria Farms in Poland?
The natural habitat of nutrias is South America. However, over time, nutrias were brought for farming to the United States, Europe, and Asia. In Poland, farming of this animal began in 1926. By 1960, as a result of nutrias escaping from farms, wild populations of nutrias emerged. Nutria farming in Poland became very popular in the late 1970s and 1980s, as a lot of pelts were produced from nutrias, especially in the western and southwestern provinces. Over time, however, nutria farming in Poland declined and is no longer as common as it was back then, partly due to unprofitability. Moreover, to keep a nutria farm, one must be adequately prepared. First of all, nutrias need appropriate housing conditions, meaning a water tank of at least 80 liters per animal and spacious, durable cages. Additionally, a proper temperature between 15 to 25 degrees must be maintained, and it is important to provide appropriate food; however, it is worth mentioning that nutrias do not have high dietary demands. Nevertheless, balanced feed will yield beautiful and perfect fur for these animals. For a farm to grow, each male should be accompanied by two to four females. Although they are not very demanding animals, it is worth ensuring they have appropriate breeding conditions, which will significantly influence successful reproduction.
